Staff Headshot Editing — What's Included and How to Order

Staff headshots are one of those things organizations put off because the logistics feel complicated. Shoot day happens, the photographer delivers a folder of files, and then — nothing. The photos sit unedited for weeks because nobody's sure what to do with them.

Here's how professional headshot editing works and what you get back.

What Headshot Editing Actually Involves

A basic headshot edit covers color correction, skin retouching, and background cleanup. Color correction makes sure the image looks natural under whatever lighting was used during the shoot. Skin retouching removes temporary blemishes, evens tone, and softens without making the subject look artificial. Background cleanup sharpens or cleans up the backdrop — particularly useful for office environments that weren't perfectly controlled.

A premium edit goes further — more detailed retouching, multiple background options (if the shooter captured the right exposure), and additional polish.

Every edited headshot is delivered in two sizes: web (for websites, LinkedIn, email signatures) and print (for directories, annual reports, press materials).

How Many Photos Per Person?

Most professional headshot sessions produce 5–15 selects per person. You don't need to edit all of them — typically 2–3 per person is enough. The culling process (selecting the best shots) can be done before sending files to your editor, or you can send everything and let the editor select the best.

If you're sending full sessions for multiple people, note how many people and approximately how many shots per person so your editor can price accurately.

Turnaround for Teams

For a standard team of 10–15 people, expect 48-hour delivery. Larger teams or more complex retouching may take longer — ask before ordering if you have a tight deadline.

A Staff Day Package covers up to 15 people with full editing and 48-hour delivery for a flat rate. For larger teams or ongoing headshot editing needs, a monthly retainer may be a better fit.

Getting Organized Files Back

Good headshot delivery is organized by person, not dumped in a single folder. Files should be named consistently — by person's last name, or however your organization prefers. Web and print sizes in separate subfolders. Ready to upload or send without additional work on your end.

That's the standard. If your current editing service isn't delivering that, it's worth finding one that does.
